About Us

Formed in 1970 by the merger of two separate school districts, the Beaufort County
School District today is governed by an 11-member Board of Education elected from
across the county. The Board of Education hires the Superintendent to manage the
daily operations and strategic vision of the district. The school district is known
for its decade-long enrollment boom, its commitment to setting high academic standards
and its community support.
Inhabited by Native Americans for a thousand years, the South Carolina Lowcountry
was “discovered” by European explorers in 1562. Permanent settlements arose in the
early 1700s, including the town of Beaufort, chartered in 1711. Today, Beaufort
is a National Landmark Historic District and boasts some of the region’s finest
Old South architecture.
The Beaufort County School District covers a large geographic area stretching from
the Atlantic shores inland to Interstate 95, and is nestled between two other historic
Southern gems, Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. In Beaufort County, Hilton Head
Island is a popular tourist destination that has become a permanent home to 30,000+
people, while nearby Bluffton continues to grow at an expansive rate.
